U.S. House · MI · Democrat · District 12

On the 2026 ballot

Summary

In office since 2019 and a member of the progressive bloc known as the Squad, Tlaib has been one the most outspoken opponents of Israel in Congress since her election, and her record has hardened sharply since 2023.

The record

Positions come from public votes, statements and on-the-record interviews. Every claim links to its source. No aggregate score or grade.

Genocide and ethnic cleansing accusations

Tlaib does not confine herself to criticizing Israeli policy. She formally and repeatedly accuses the state of Israel of genocide and ethnic cleansing. In November 2025 she introduced a resolution to have Congress recognize Israel's Gaza campaign as genocide. Her Nakba resolutions of May 2024 and May 2026 assert that "the apartheid government of Israel is committing a genocide" and accuse it of ongoing ethnic cleansing across the West Bank and Jerusalem. In March 2026 she introduced a resolution and issued a statement charging Israel with "war crimes and ethnic cleansing" in Lebanon and invoking a "genocidal playbook."

Votes against Israel's defense

In September 2021 she was one of only nine members to oppose one billion dollars for Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system, calling Israel "an apartheid regime" on the House floor. In November 2023 she opposed further military aid, framing it as funding "genocide." In 2026 she called for a total arms embargo on Israel and, according to her office, introduced National Defense Authorization Act amendments to block deeper defense cooperation between the United States and Israel. On September 3, 2026 she voted against H.R. 4795, a bipartisan bill denying federal higher education funds to institutions that boycott Israel, which supporters including its Democratic cosponsor framed as a measure to combat antisemitism in the form of BDS.

Opposition to antisemitism measures

In November 2024 Tlaib was one of only three Democrats to vote against H.Res. 1449, which endorsed State Department global guidelines and the IHRA working definition of antisemitism. Tlaib said the IHRA definition "dangerously conflates criticism of the state of Israel with antisemitism." She has taken similar positions against later measures she regards as using antisemitism to restrict criticism of Israel.

Rhetoric and censure

On November 7, 2023, the House censured her, 234 to 188, with 22 Democrats joining, for "promoting false narratives regarding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack" and for language it said called for Israel's destruction, including a video accusing President Biden of supporting "the genocide of the Palestinian people" and featuring the antisemitic chant "from the river to the sea." She defended the phrase as "aspirational."
