AJCongress Council for World Jewry
Praises Pakistan for its Role in Foiling Terror Plot
The American Jewish Congress-Council for World Jewry has congratulated Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf for his country’s cooperation with the British and American governments in helping to break up a suspected plot to attack U.S.-bound aircraft, saving thousands of lives.
The AJCongress-Council for World Jewry promotes dialogue and cooperation with Pakistan as part of its effort to improve relations between Jews and Muslims.
In an August 14, 2005 letter to the Pakistani leader, Chairman Jack Rosen said that “Especially at this time of increased conflict, we think it is crucial to underscore the fact that Pakistan is standing shoulder to shoulder against extremism and terrorism.”
“It is vital that Pakistan be brought into the camp of all those battling extremism and terrorism,” Rosen said.
“Pakistan’s leader supports dialogue and denounces extremism. President Musharraf is an example of the moderate Moslem leadership who ought to be embraced in the West.”
The AJCongress-Council for World Jewry also praised the Bush administration and Congressional leaders for allowing the largest program of U.S. support to Pakistan’s armed forces in history.
This summer, the Council sponsored trips to Israel by prominent Pakistani American activists and by Pakistani musicians. The latter trip was the first public visit to Israel by anyone traveling on a Pakistani passport as well as ongoing dialogue and face to face meetings between President Musharraf and Mr. Rosen.
On September 17, 2005, President Musharraf addressed an historic public gathering of the American Jewish leadership gathered under the Council banner in New York City. |
